These are as follows: the left thumb is you a person on Earth and the right thumb represents mankind. Now working from the left hand to the right hand the fingers represent your: Family, Friends, Neighbours, Community-Town, Region, Country and Continent.

These eight fingers and two thumbs add up to the ten basic levels at which humanity in my opinion relates on a global scale. Ten levels that enable each person to relate to the other 6 billion people living on our Earth. Ten levels that can help each of us to cope with the rapid globalisation that modern technology has brought to humanity. Ten levels from a Man to Mankind, a person to all people.

In the document that follows I have devoted a page of explanation to each of the ten levels, explaining each level in the form of a brief commitment for each of you to consider. The ten commitments each has a series of solutions, which are indicative of the changes we need to consider and which, I hope, each of us can gradually adopt and develop as soon as possible, whether we are male or female, old or young, grandparent, parent or child. The gradual adoption of these solutions will I hope, bring about a new relationship between each person and to all people. A new moral relationship that will enable us to live in harmony with nature and the earth’s beautiful, but finite, resources.

At the same time we would gradually adopt a zero footprint lifestyle, slowly and then rapidly reversing our destruction of our living system on Earth.

At present globalisation is rapidly placing all power and control into the five administrative levels in your right hand. We need to move that power and responsibility towards the five local community based levels in your left hand.

1. Self
2. Family
3. Friends
4. Neighbours
5. Community/village
6. Town/city
7. Region
8. Country
9. Continent
10. Mankind

As we each do what we can to achieve these commitments, ripples will occur up and down each level, creating a new moral relationship for all of humanity. This is typified by the potential for the UN to become the United Continents of Earth (UCE) within which each continent would unite its constituent countries and resolve their issues at that level.

The potential for humanity and our life system on Earth in 2005 is a beautiful one, but we must radically review our impact and use of the finite resources. The developed and developing nations must equally adjust rapidly to a new approach to the use of our air, our water, our soil, our resources....our life system on Earth.

I hope some of this message makes sense to those of you it reaches, in particular politicians, poets, playwrights, artists, statesmen, architects, industrialists etc. and that each of us can work rapidly to adopt and develop these new moral commitments.

Yours hopefully,

From a Man to Mankind
