Commitment 6: Town/City

The town or city is often a merger of many communities/villages providing extra facilities that are not viable at village level. These include higher education better health facilities and entertainment.

This is normally the first level at which staff are employed to manage the needs of the community and it is desirable that they live in, and commit themselves, to the community.1.1 I will endeavour to: live by the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

6.1 Each town/city needs to modify its primary aims to become totally sustainable within three generations. The sooner this is achieved the better for all mankind.

6.2 All aspects of life in the town should be designed to encourage the enhancement of biodiversity.

6.3 Pollution of the town’s air, water and soil must be controlled and gradually then rapidly, phased out.

6.4 All commercial, industrial and residential waste must be collected, gradually reduced and fully recycled.

6.5 Non-renewable resources are to be phased out in favour of a totally renewable lifestyle.

6.6 Self sufficiency from local produce should be developed to promote and encourage local employment, land use and culture.

6.7 Local provision of all energy needs is to be promoted using renewable fuels for high efficiency installations, with maximum insulation for all properties.

6.8 Public transport must be improved and private individual transport reduced. All transport should be based on renewable fuels and vehicles constructed of fully reusable materials.

6.9 Each town/city should implement an ethical purchase and investment strategy backed by a fair trade policy.

6.10 Every town should develop the natural skills, crafts and arts of its area to encourage local distinctiveness and civic pride.

It is thought that Humanity’s migration across all continents began in
East Africa 120,000 years ago.

Vision is not enough; it must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps. We must step up the stairs.
